Since being sadly and suddenly out of work for the last two weeks, I’ve been spending a lot of time on the auld worldwoide web, looking around for opportunities and ideas about what to do next. It having been a while since I was in the same situation, so I headed initially to LinkedIn and Indeed, places that, in the past, have yielded a job or two and several interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And my, they’ve become really rather horrible, haven’t they? I’ve been aware of LinkedIn turning into an AI slop-fest but nowhere is this more apparent than the job listings. Every employer is either the ‘leader in AI blah blah’ or existing to somehow prop up the AI industry. My favourites are the “jobs” (could they not spell “torture”?) that consist of prompting an LLM and correcting its output. F*ck right off chap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My worry is that when people\/companies\/public organisations actually have to start paying for AI, their costs will suddenly skyrocket. For crappy businesses leeching off the bloated AI bubble, the just desserts await in the form of bankruptcy. But I fear taxpayers will soon be sending a lot more Council Tax or whathaveyou to Silicon Valley billionaires for the dubious pleasure of the ‘efficiency gains’ that large language models don’t actually provide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lots of people will soon be out of work after peri-AI businesses are forced to fold. Any AI business that uses OpenAI or Anthropic to provide whatever-it-is had better have massive margins as of now, because in six months or so, red ink on its balance sheet is going to be a lot more common. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is worrisome if you’re scouting around for a job. It’s barely worth the bother of applying for most roles on LinkedIn or the big job sites, unless you enjoy being ghosted by distant HR departments, and it’s doubly not worth it if the business apparently recruiting is somehow doing something with OpenAI\/Anthropic by proxy. Why waste time on an application that’s 90% likely to be ignored, and if it’s not ignored, the business isn’t going to exist in a year? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing is a highly competitive area to work in, especially when so many writers put prepositions at the end of sentences. Let me start that again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing is a highly competitive area in which to work, and many jobbing wordsmiths have lost their jobs because large language models create a facsimile of good text at apparently little or no cost (note, it’s only good text if, you know, you’ve never read a book.) As soon as using ChatGPT 5.whatever becomes expensive, perhaps every writer will be offered a job again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until then, there’s plenty on LinkedIn to enjoy. It’s always been a platform for self-congratulation and the pontifications of those who should probably be best avoided (top tip: anyone whose account photo has them holding a microphone should be ignored), but now even the self-importance is machine-generated. Are people too lazy to be actively conceited these days? Why make an LLM make shit up about how great you are, when surely something self-penned will be so much more effective?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
